Science as it relates to fitness

I am working on being fit....
so, I paid up and joined  a gym on Thursday.
It's fantastic...comfy, like working out in your grandmother's HUGE house, if your grandmother had a mansion. It makes the whole thing more intimate, since it's all small rooms.
Well, it IS the second oldest gym in the country, and it's got a bar...so, as my friend Julia said, "now you can have a Bloody Mary while on the eliptical machine"....I don't drink bloody Mary's...but this is one of the things I absolutely LOVE about New Orleans. Only here.

I went to Pilates on Friday and Yoga on Saturday....today I'm working on a grant proposal, so I gave myself the day off....Here's to volleyball for 2 hours tomorrow and....

science as it relates to fitness:::

Newton's First Law:

An object at rest tends to stay at rest and an object in motion tends to stay in motion

Here's to staying in motion!!!

and well, working out and drinking more in general!!!
Laissez les bons temps roulez!

New House....

Well, I've been busy.....
I got married, moved, now near New Orleans.

Remodeling house, new urban garden...
it's fun to garden here.....mandevilla, gardenia, white bird of paradise, camellia, so many flowers and plants!!!

So little money...pictures soon...

art castings....here we go....

Take the cylinders out of my kidneys
The connecting rods out of my brain,
The crankshaft out of my backbone,
And assemble the engine again.

Clay pick up lines and a Greek Version of the Soup Nazi Category

Just got back from the NCECA conference in Pittsburgh...
(National Council for Education of the Ceramic Arts..
for those of y’all not in the clay know...)

So...I went with two other people from North Central College....my friend Chrissy, the full time ceramics professor there.....who I’ve known for 7 years...evidently...didn’t realize that until this weekend...and a graduating senior student in ceramics/art education major named Katie....

It was great running into people you know, meeting new people, (ie...Networking), hearing great lectures, critiquing bad ones and seeing and experiencing new art on exhibit...and eventually critiquing that as well....and doing that in the company of friends...

Highlights from the trip....

  • snow on the drive there so we missed the opening speakers/ceremony...

  • Walking through maybe a not nice neigborhood in town....trying to get to the Mattress Factory...Pittsburgh has FANTASTIC signs...I am serious....every town should have signs with arrows so you know where you’re going...it was a total highlight....hey baby....you got that mad look on your face...like you don’t wanna be doing this. And then walking back to downtown with some great ladies we met at the museum....and seeing really fabulous federal and colonial style architecture...at least what I think was federal and colonial style...I could be wrong...and some great stained glass...Oh...and getting really horrible blisters from said walk....and did I mention it was uphill????

  • horrible food options including a Greek version of the soup nazi last night.horrible service...white vinegar watered down iceberg lettuce ONLY in a greek salad????, when I asked if they took credit cards he said yes....only for when I went to pay he said no.....not enough pita for the hummus......he was a crabby version of the soup nazi but without a killer lentil soup to go with it.....yet, at the same time a bit amusing for how HORRIBLE our dinner experience was...Recovering from said horrible experience at the Martini bar....good band...with a rather cute waiter to look at....

  • Running into my old iron buddy afterwards...and he’s moving back to Chi-town!!!

  • MY FAVORITE PICK UP LINE....at a different bar last night...overhearing boy tells girl...."hey...when I finish building my kiln, you can come up and help me fire it..."

Cold Carolers Caroling....

I got home from work late....but I found out that it was the Homewood Christmas tree lighting ceremony!!!!
SOOOOOO....Amy and I went because they had free carriage rides. We were the only adults we saw without children there, by the way..
We waited for a while to get on...and we were completely lucky because the people we were with were really fun and wanted to sing Christmas carols....and so we just joined in.. one of the little girls even sang Feliz Navidad and we joined in the chorus...
We phoned a friend when we couldn't remember the 11th and 12th day of Christmas.....mom and Chris amazingly struck out....but Cousin was a good phone a friend in this instance and googled it for us.....and we were able to keep singing....at one point the people with us were ad libbing...cold carolers caroling instead of four calling birds..
then Amy and I went and saw the Christmas trees and decided next year...we shall enter the Christmas tree decorating contest...:)
Michelle, apparently the Grinch who stayed home because she's "allergic" to horses, made up for it by making us very yummy Hot Cocoa with Whipped Cream on top when we got home and couldn't feel our toesies.....mmmm..

I am now totally in the Christmas spirit!!!

Singing my little heart out....

Let it snow!!!!!
Let it snow!!!!!
Let it snow!!!!!

The particially bionic cat.

Lady got hit by a car or some other traumatic injury on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. She was at the vet with Grish all weekend....Grish was on call...and Grish saw her on Wednesday. She broke her femur in a couple places. It was a difficult weekend while Grish checked for heart/lung bruising and any possible neurological damage. We had to decide if we wanted to go ahead with the surgery...and basically decided if she made it through the weekend ok we would, since they said they could fix her and she should be as pretty good as new leg. Mom and I drove her down to Purdue on Monday. They had to wait until Thursday because of all the admittees after the holiday weekend...and they liked Lady....they had crazy dogs they wanted out on Wednesday. She had a pretty complicated surgery, but they saved her femoral head. She had a pin, 6 screws and a plate put in her leg. She broke her pelvis, but not bad enough to repair. It should heal on it's own. She's in confinement for the next 6 weeks. Mom and I just brought her back last Friday. She just settled a little. She initially tried to climb up Trixie's old cage, so Amy and mom went to the store and bought a new cage so I wouldn't worry about her falling while trying to get out....So, it's been a rather traumatic week for us all as we realized we were more emotionally attached to the cat than we thought...and it's difficult, but she should be a-ok in about 6 weeks.....and annoying in a couple because she'll think she's better...but she's not...I'm calling her the partially bionic cat...The x-rays were fierce. She's got 4 inches of metal in her little leg. Metal runs all the way up and down her entire femur. It's a lot on her little cat frame. The incision runs almost all the way down her entire leg. It's very sad, really.....but she seems to be doing ok.....and she's started purring and is just a little badass cat still....she sat on my lap for a while while Amy and mom were getting the new cage, so I'll bring her out later and do the same so she's got some normal-ness.It's going to be a long 6 weeks. I can't imagine this with a sick kid....it's bad enough as it is...

Auntie Barbara's Bed Bath and Biscuit...yes...I know...we'll see if it works out...
I'm going to see about getting Baron an interview....
Yes...I realize what this says about me....but it's like an all day dog park.....

it will be happy tired dog...maybe...
