Anna and the Rubber Tree....

Well.....not really. But the other bridesmaid, Nicole, made Anna a children's book for her wedding gift entitled Anna and the Rubber Tree. It was soooooooo amazing!!!!!!

I am back from my very long weekend in my other home....NOLA....
Anna and Sean's wedding was just wonderful!!!! It was a very relaxed affair and they both made it seem like a mere formality, which it was to them. It was so wonderful to get to share in their day and weekend!!!!

The bachelorette party was in the quarter on Halloween...Fun!!! I rented a condo for the four nights and Nicole, Anna and me...Michael came too......and was part of the fun!!! Michael went as a bag of leaves. I went as a bayou babe...Nicole went as a Slumphie....(Smurfette) Anna went as...hell I don't remember....we drank a lot of bourbon.....yes....I thought it was 4....it was more like at least 8....we wound our way down Bourbon Street to Frenchman and back with many stops in between.......Living Legends Brass Band...they ROCKED!!!

Thursday was huungover day and off to Anna's house to get fit and attempt to help with flowers...the dress was at least two sizes too big to start...drank some champagne...off to get my hair cut...more champagne...then off to dinner at Tomatilo's with Chris and his family...then bed. I crashed.

Friday I saw a couple customers in the morning...yeah! Lunch with Chris - yummy Vietnamese- thanks!!! and saw his house addition progressing....very nice....and back to the condo, changed really fast and helped unload the flowers, etc. at the hotel.......off to the rehearsal...with some mishaps with Nicole and Martin's hotel room reservation getting lost.......who didn't think the rehearsal would start a half hour late? eh. It turned out fine. The dinner was at Brigtsen's. I don't think I've ever had better Beef Tournedos. I love Sean's family! They are so much fun! I got to hang out with Anna's dad and Billy...they are fun, too!!
It was just SOOOOOO lovely that night...so much warmth and love in the room.....more champagne and bourbon.....good food.....I was going to go to Cooters, but I got advice to go to bed.....

Saturday....lazy morning followed by at noon when we were supposed to leave for the spa....frantically making boutinerres the last minute and six more table decorations because Anna got the extra room...

Anywho. The Spa Aria at the Hotel Monteleone...I would recommend. It was wonderful!!!!!! More champagne. Then off to decorate the courtyard at the St Louis Hotel....... THANK YOU MICHAEL!!!!

Wedding at the Tulane Chapel....thanks be to Michael Phillips!!!! Thanks be to Michael Batt for giving him the keys!!!! No one from Tulane EVER showed up.....Mr Washington...you are on my shit list. For something like a wedding, their ought to be SOMEONE from staff there to at least unlock the doors, if not do something like maybe ask if we needed anything. Thanks for nothing.

The wedding was great....although the somber look on many of the guys faces in the crowd was probably due to the LSU-Alabama game in the 3rd quarter, I believe.....he he he.
I sang Ave Maria.....evidently I didn't suck. I was so nervous, it meant a lot and I haven't sang with an organ in a long time...especially not without really rehearsing.

Then we got to party!!! Yeah! The hotel looked beautiful....and my favorite was asking Nicole, who is from outside Hanover, Germany....what was different about American weddings...and she said you know...in Germany we hire people to do the flowers. It's not even the most expensive part of the wedding. You can tell people what you want......I laughed and said that this was not a typical American wedding in that regard.......they're called florists...and yes, we have them....it was really funny...

The band was really good....Jerry Lyons and the Deltabilly Boys. Check 'em out.

Nicole, Martin, Michael, Chris and I hung out most of the reception and then went to Cats Meow...where I was going to try and get Nicole to sing 99 Red Balloons in German...my FAVORITE kareoke memory of all times.....I was going to sing a Tiffany song..but they had no 80s music.....damn them...but Nicole had the best expressions of the club......Martin was pooped. everyone else left, so Chris and I walked around and had a great time.

I spent Sunday recovering by napping and eating all day....La Madeleine's....Champagne Brunch at the Royal Sonesta.....and then hung out with Michael and watched the end of the Saints Game.....I tried to fly home Sunday night...my flight was delayed for over 3 hours. I have no idea if it ever went off, because about half of us got scheduled to leave Monday....so....Michael and I got po-boys from Danny and Clyde's...Roast beef...mmmmm.....and I got a bonus day with Michael to recooperate from my big night out......

We slept most of the day and then went to Little Tokyo..mmmmmm....and then went shopping on Magazine and I got a couple tshirts that make me laugh really hard...the sales lady said I have an infectious laugh..it was fun...then off to Borders to see if I could get Dana Abbott's cd, but they were sold out in the local section...way to go Dana!!!! Then back to the airport where as soon as I got to the gate they announced it was delayed a half hour..roars of laughter from my sister and Chris...my mom said I had to come home tonight....she didn't want to work all week....New Orleans can't keep me...

Anywho....it was a really fabulous weekend...I feel like a part of Anna and Sean's family. It was soooo nice to get to meet them after all these years. I was very happy all weekend. I'll post pics...

yes....my plan for a weekend of drinking and eating managed to work out...yeah!!!

now it's just going right again...

Makes sense that I'm right brained, but does anyone else see it moving right???

If Lego Star Wars wasn't enough for ya....

Here's an email I got from cuz today....

Subject: Star Wars Light Saber Is Finally Launched into Space

I know many of you have repeatedly said to yourself, wouldn't the
Universe be a better place if Luke Skywalker's light saber had actually
ventured into space. Well frett no more.

The actual prop from the movie the Mark Hamil held in his Jedi actor
hand is stowed away on the shuttle Discovery at the NASA Kennedy Space
Center. It will travel into space with the astronauts into the
Internaional Space Station - for seven days and will travel 6 million miles in
14 days and then will return to Earth.

What a wonderful way to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the fill
RETURN OF THE JEDI.

I just hope the astronauts don't hurt themselves playing with it.

If you want to watch how the lightsaber's journey began check it out at
http://www.starwars.com/video/view/000545.html.

Hope you're well.

Peace out,
Elizabeth Klaviter
Faithful Star Wars Fan and your friend.

PS. Speaking of peace and the Earth - please remember - contribute to
the health of this great planet that we live on.

Love you cuz!!!!

Michael...you know me OH so well..

Wood Porn
For anyone that loves good wood....

Shoe Saturdays

Second class went well with the kids and ceramics....be an architect day....since they wanted to make bird houses...it was fun...if not difficult because I made them work with slabs.
They look really good, though...wait til you see what the five and six year olds did....yeah, I'm a pretty good art teacher...It's amazing what happens when you challenge kids....they continue to amaze you.
So...then on the prowl for copper shoes for anna's wedding....I took mom and went up and met with Susan and we started here at Grace....
http://www.chicagomag.com/Radar/Sales-Check/August-2007/New-Shoes-in-Bucktown/
Probably not the brightest of ideas to START at the amazing Italien boutique shoe store...I did find a pair of FABULOUS copper shoes here.....just welll....way more than I thought about spending on shoes for a wedding.....but then again...I'd wear them again....strappy strappy four inch heels....with ankle wraps and tie in front...ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh. But, no I did not buy them..
Then we went to DSW.....it's HUGE. Lines of shoes.....and nothing. We found nothing. No copper. No cute shoes....we all tried to find something. Last time I went there I found SOOOO many shoes I wanted but I was in grad school....
Then off to dinner....a couple blocks away....
http://www.miafrancesca.com/restaurants/mia/
mom had the yummmmmmmmy pumpkin ravioli, which would have killed me because it was in a sage butter sauce. I got a pasta broccolli dish..and Susan got the Mahi Mahi with prawns...
Mom and I split a Lava Torte.....mmmmmm.

Next Saturday.....more shoe shopping for copper shoes....if I don't find a pair by then, I'm going to buy a cheap pair and paint them copper.....the irony is....the dresses are purple...and purple is IN so we saw over a dozen pairs of purple heels that probably would have been fine if I knew what color purple the dress was....

Oh yeah.....it's almost my favorite time of year...

art research...

So, I was doing some research on mold.....for this proposal I'm starting to work on for a show...
Someone at this luncheon today wanted to know when I was going to do a show at the substation...when the gallery director asks you....so I'm working on my proposal....
ANYWHO...I came across this artist...Stacy Levy...I like to share artists who I think are just doing really neat work.....THIS IS REALLY NEAT WORK....check out some of the installations.

undergarments

Yes, undergarments.

Anna's wedding is less than a month away.....
I'm shoe shopping this weekend...and Mom asked me about undergarments, too....

This is probably one of the most self-indulgent times I get.....when I'm in a wedding...I allow myself the lingerie I don't normally allow myself to splurge on...and even if I don't splurge I'll still go looking....but it's not the Victoria Secret nothings that I long for that men seem to drool over. It has nothing to do with men for me, at least not really. It's more about how I want to feel.

I've always had a thing for retro undergarments. It might go back to me wearing Oma's floor length négligées as a kid and then twisting them up for different styles...I dunno...
I was the only one in high school to have a merry widow...In college, I bought one of my still most favorite 1950's slip in purple....oh...I love that thing...check it out if you're in New Orleans. It is still one of my most favorite places to be in....House of Lounge. My favorite bra is from House of Lounge. I found a neat website and it has this nifty little history of stockings....

In any case, a good undergarment is the foundation of the outfit..and they make you look curvy where you're supposed to...make you feel more confident and beautiful no matter what item it is

and maybe just maybe they remind me of a connection to a more glamorous time when people got dressed up for dinner and sat around a piano

and I guess it even reminds me of Oma playing Let Me Call You Sweetheart for Opa....

maybe it's the romantic part of me with a little sass thrown in......just maybe.

The Atomic Age

So....I saw this little article for a Ford mid-century concept car, the Nucleon just below the Ig awards and it made me chuckle....
People would be just a little more careful about how they treated other cars if these guys were on the road...as Amy's friend Anna used to say about London commuters....People ought to have a little fear when they bump into you rudely..in New York, you could get shot...you're a little nicer..

and this jogged my memory of the exhibit I was trying to think of earlier this week or sometime last week when talking of car design....

Retrofuturism: The Car Design of J Mays
that I saw at MOCA in Los Angeles in 2003.

scoping out for foundry type

Doing a plaque for my aunt's church....hoping to find some new foundry type.

Supposedly we've got some up in the loft, dad says.....

I'm trying to get it set up to do more, so figured it couldn't hurt to see what's out there....

Anywho... this made me chuckle and also think of many things in my parent's house in general

weeds

So, I decided I needed to get the weeds down since it was starting to look like a jungle out front....looks way better now.
And I tackled the tomato plants in the back garden....not an easy feat.

Saturday, October 6, 2007

Hey y'all.

So, it's been a crazy busy couple of weeks.

My sales trip down the river went well....I got an order this week in. Yeah!
So, for those that don't know.... I drove to NOLA and made sales calls along the way and while there. (Part of my master plan to be back in NOLA more often) I drove down 61 in Mississippi and spent Wed night in Greenville with my friend Chris and had a very nice steak dinner in the middle of a cotton field. It was marinated in bourbon....mmmm...thanks Chris!...I got to see frogs crossing the road....dessert was conversing with my dear friend until my eyes couldn't handle being open anymore.

I hadn't slept in a few nights, so I slept in and before taking the leisurely drive down to NOLA Thursday....I stopped at the Kermit Museum...or rather the Jim Henson Delta Boyhood Exhibit, which Chris had been talking about since he took his job there.....and that I couldn't pass up the idea of it...classic small town museum...The conversation with Emily, a stereotypical small town lady, where I got to learn all about her son, who's in Iraq and her daughter's old Big Bird slippers, and the best part was tucked in a corner....I'd hate to spoil it for you...you'll just have to visit Chris and see it...

I spent the rest of the evening/night with my friend Julia....who is always so good to see and we generally laugh way past our normal bedtime....then spent all of Friday seeing potential customers....and headed over to Tulane...met up with my favorite undergrad advisors...missed some people too.....and met some new fun people!!! Had a couple drinks at Ralph's on the Park waiting for Julia...was still feeling chatty...

Then spent the rest of the weekend with Anna and Sean moving into their house on the North Shore!!!! YEAH! I cannot explain the pure excitement I felt for them. How exciting it is to move into your first house and to just have things go well. That is truly what one wishes for their friends. It is such a honor to get to be a part of it at any stage. I don't think I'd want to live on the North Shore, but it was nice to visit and Sunday brunch was completely cute and tasty with mimosas to boot....our reward for the move Saturday....It was good to see Dave and finally meet Anna's dad...he's been an enigma to me for many years as I've known Anna for ten years and never met him and she's stayed with all my family, I believe. All of this is offset by the fact that I still have bruises from some of the boxes...but I can move again, so it's all good.

Crashed with Chris on my way back...hey, thanks for being the perfect stopping distance for the time being....AND for the use of the TOTALLY KICK ASS WELDING HELMET and hit another customer Monday morning before driving the rest of the way Monday......

So, yeah...it was a quick trip...but now you're all updated...

OH....and I started teaching a class today....Saturday mornings...10-11:30. Handbuilding for kids...ages 5-11 are in the class. Community art center. There's 9..8 showed up today. It was SOOOOO much fun. I'm viewing it as therapy I'm not paying for. Evidently Aliens are SOOO not good. Not the kinds from other countries, but the more than likely could be out there in space somewhere but it's not proven.....and one girl would TOTALLY NOT RECOMMEND seeing War of the Worlds.....the one with Dakota Fanning. It was scary and not good.
I tell ya, they are fabulous!

AND....Dad and I started working on the burnout furnace...yes...it is very exciting...I just bought the last part for it today....now I can weld the legs on....oh yeah. For those that don't know what that means....it means art castings and sculptures a-comin' soon....

OK...Amy corrected me...

I liked other video games....
like...
  1. KABOOM!!!! YEAH! Who can't love stopping bombs with water buckets??!?!?!?!?
  2. Jungle Hunt....I liked to hit the button when Tarzan was swimming....to kill the crocodiles..it made a fun swishing sound....so Amy tells me, which I vaguely remember..I think I also like the action..
    and...
  3. FREEWAY.
which brings us back to chickens.

What you've all been waiting for....some documentation of ORANJE 2007

A quick clip of near our spot on the second floor...before the excitement.
my new cool friends did the Skin Printz booth. LOOK for the bubble wrap and christmas lights.
Kay Grimm and Sue Spicer.
They are FABULOUS!!!!!
I am so thankful to have met them.

Better video documentation when I can figure out how to transfer the tape from Heather's camera....I think I need to get a different cord....later!

Special thanks to Stephen and Francie for all their help!!! And for staying through the finish line....hugs to you my friends!!! Next year Francie may collaborate with me.......yeah!!!

Chicken Nemesis, Continued.

A bad poem in remembrance of
The Great Chicken Nemesis, Summer 2007:
Evidently the dog down the street,
The mean pit that occasionally gets loose and attacks not only white meat
And the reason the woman down the street
Walks her Beagle with a baseball batt held close her feet.
Well, he got out and killed chicken nemesis for a quick treat.

He left her out on the back step of Bob's house.
Same dog killed Chicken Nemesis's brother,
what a louse!!!
So they are both gone, one after another.

Video Games

OK. So, most of my friends know by now that I haven't had a television since I bought my house.....however, Amy has a tv. And yes, she doesn't have cable, just good ol' rabbit ears. Yes, Klaviter's are shrewd, frugal, or cheap...however you'd like to put it.

Anywho, Michelle has a game cube at Amy's house and bought Amy the LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy game. Now, if you've been my friend for a while...you might remember that the only video games I ever really loved was River Raid and MAYBE Mario Brothers.....however, THIS ONE ROCKS!
Amy and I played together for 4 hours tonight...it was totally corny and fun.
So, I would highly recommend it...

Evidently, I'm really good with a gun,
not so good with the light saber.....
and I generally fall off ramps....
I'm a clutz even in a game...
gotta work on that...

Cousin is famous...

An article came out last week...

check it out...
My cousin!!!

She's brillant, gorgeous and famous!

Check out the full story at:

In Pictures: TV's Network Know-It-Alls

Here's the highlights:

ABC's Private Practice
Elizabeth Klaviter, Director of Medical Research
Given Klaviter's daily duties, it's hard to believe her background is in theater, not medicine. Serving as director of medical research on Grey's Anatomy and new spin-off Private Practice, she spends much of her time leafing through medical journals and talking to experts about hundreds of ailments that could find their way into the shows' storylines. In Klaviter's tenure, that's included everything from a seemingly pregnant man to a woman killed by hiccups. Her rule of thumb: If the situation hasn't actually happened, it could happen.

Sushi...

It's what's for dinner.

I don't know why or when sushi became my comfort food...but it is....and I feel better.
And let me be more specific. I only like Tuna rolls. Tonight was a spicy tuna with avocado......sans roe. That would be icky.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

P.S. I HAVE tried other kinds of sushi...with Sierra, in fact. Tuna rolls are the ones I LOVE, so that's what I eat...It's not that I'm not adventurous, ok?

Success in a B.L.T.

Nemesis defeated.
Four BEAUTIFUL tomatoes.

I think maybe these were just too hard to get to for that chicken...
they were kinda in the middle and in weird positions up higher and mixed in the tomato plants.

Amy and I had Bacon, Lettuce and HOME GROWN TOMATO Sandwiches for dinner.
Oh boy, they were good.

Sorry my mom had the flu.
But, there are still two left....maybe she'll feel better tomorrow.

I finally finished all my wood pedestals to take to Indy tomorrow to set up for ORANJE.

Movie...

Similar to Before Sunset according to the critics.

At a languid pace, but I stayed awake for this one, which I haven't been able to do for Before Sunset/Sunrise...sorry Nick, I truly keep trying!!!

Parker Posey had developed this character with such finess in the subtle moments that which made this film. I heart Parker Posey....and this movie is no different.

Not so much a comedy, although there were moments that made me laugh in the that hard deep laugh that comes from within your soul. I think it was beautiful. I do love good character developement...

Quotes of the Day

"To an engineer, good enough means perfect.
With an artist, there's no such thing as perfect."

Alexander Calder

"Action and reaction, ebb and flow, trial and error, change -
this is the rhythm of living.
Out of our over-confidence, fear; out of our fear, clearer vision, fresh hope.
And out of hope, progress."

From the Desk of Baron.....

DOG'S PRAYER

TO: GOD
FROM: THE DOG

Dear God:
Why do humans smell the flowers, but seldom, if ever, smell one another?

Dear God:
When we get to heaven, can we sit on your couch? Or is it still the same old story?

Dear God:
Why are there cars named after the jaguar, the cougar, the mustang, the colt, the stingray, and the rabbit, but not ONE named for a dog? How often do you see a cougar riding around? We do love a nice ride!
Would it be so hard to rename the "Chrysler Eagle" the "Chrysler Beagle"?

Dear God:
If a dog barks his head off in the forest and no human hears him, is he still a bad dog?

Dear God:
We dogs can understand human verbal instructions, hand signals, whistles, horns, clickers, beepers, scent ID's, electromagnetic energy fields, and Frisbee flight paths.
What do humans understand?

Dear God:
More meatballs, less spaghetti, please.

Dear God:
Are there mailmen in Heaven? If there are, will I have to apologize?

Dear God:
Let me give you a list of just some of the things I must remember to be a good dog.

1 . I will not eat the cats' food before they eat it or after they throw it up.
2. I will not roll on dead seagulls, fish, crabs, etc., just because I like the way they smell.
3. The Litter Box is not a cookie jar.
4. The sofa is not a 'face towel.'
5. The garbage collector is not stealing our stuff.
6. I will not play tug-of-war with Dad's underwear when he's on the toilet.
7. Sticking my nose into someone's crotch is an unacceptable way of saying "hello."
8. I don't need to suddenly stand straight up when I'm under the coffee table .
9. I must shake the rainwater out of my fur before entering the house - not after.
10. I will not come in from outside and immediately drag my butt.
11. I will not sit in the middle of the living room and lick my crotch.
12. The cat is not a 'squeaky toy' so when I play with him and he makes that noise, it's usually not a good thing.

P.S.
Dear God:
When I get to Heaven may I have my testicles back?

Architecture and Beer....Ahhhh.

If You Love: Architecture

Instead of: Berlin Try: Prague

Since the fall of the Wall, Berlin has established itself as perhaps the premiere city for modern architecture in Europe. However, this renewed prosperity has also made Germany one of the most expensive destinations in Europe. Penny pinchers should head instead for Prague, where modern masterpieces such as Frank Gehry's famous Dancing House mingle with excellent Baroque, Rococo, and Art Nouveau buildings spanning the past 600 years of architecture.
Sample Savings: A pint of beer costs around $5 in Berlin, compared to $1 for a pint in Prague.
That's what a girl likes to hear!!!

I'm wearing a sweatshirt

It is

79°F
ClearWind: N at 0 mph
Humidity: 69%

at 9:25pm.....

I am officially like the old southern woman I remembered from Christmas in October who had her heat on when it got below 80....

at least I'm starting to feel better from the magic blue kill spider germ pills...
and MUCH sleep this week.

The garden looks like a jungle again from the thunderstorms we've had...
the tomatoes are down again in the bell peppers and basil.

Cherry tomatoes are starting to come down around my ears.

I've had to chase the mysterious chicken...more on that later...
out of my garden multiple times...who has also been chased by Baron...
trampling my chives....and that DAMN chicken has eaten more than three or four of my big beefies.....

Are you spider?
Yes I'm spider...
as I say to the nurse...

bites, that is.

On antibiotics for infected spider bites....got bit Thursday night...
went to the doctor last night.

I just feel rather icky...still itchy....and painful.

So, for anyone that saw The Simpsons Movie....
thanks to Chris,

I've had the Spiderpig song in my head all day
instead of pig
insert girl.

instead of walking on the ceiling.
insert me on the sofa holding my neck/head where the main infection is...

No worries...I should start to feel better in three to four days when these
big blue "spider pill" antibiotics kick in.

Fun times...
Evidently keep in mind that most spiders that actually bite you like they did me get infected. Antibiotic ointment may help, sometimes not since they push your skin bacteria into the wound. Makes sense when you think about it....I just didn't want to..
So, if it lasts more than three days, go get antibiotics or it'll spread and get worse like mine...

DAMN SPIDER!

Surrender to Destiny

OK, so this weekend people have seemed to ask me more often than normal how I live without a tv actually hooked up. I have high speed internet, but not even rabbit ears. But, I have the puppy, the cat, gardening, this blog and to be honest I don't really miss it overall.
Sometimes I rent movies.
Sometimes I go over to my sister or my parents to watch a program or a game.
Sometimes I just get mezmerized by the tv at a friend's house or bar.....
And Sometimes I watch tv shows on youtube.
I thought it would be remiss of me not to mention this show,
since I watched it again earlier this evening.

Wonderfalls.
I LOVE this program. I love the quirkiness. Caroline, who plays Jane, is a brilliant actress and portrays this character that is completely unlike another I've seen on a tv program.
It only aired one season and it tries to have a sort of conclusion in the 13th episode.
Michael and I rented it on netflix when we lived together, and it was agonizing waiting for the second DVD to get in to watch the second half of the season.
So far it is still one of my favorite programs.

I think a good premise of the show is when Jane's friend Mahandra says,
“So why struggle with Fate?
Life can be sort of peaceful when you stop struggling with Fate.”

You have to see the pilot, or the first episode, to understand the premise of the show, though....
so watch that first or you've be very confused...

Check it out when you get some time...the quirkiness ensues about five minutes in...

Here's a synopsis I found for those of you who like knowing what a show is about before seeing it:
Set against the backdrop of Niagara Falls, WONDERFALLS is a funny, provocative and magical one-hour dramedy about JAYE TYLER (CAROLINE DHAVERNAS), an underachieving twenty-something souvenir shop worker whose life is forever changed after she has what her family calls “an episode.” That’s when inanimate animal figures – toys, cartoon images, anything in the form of an animal – begin talking to her, and their cryptic messages set into motion a chain of events that invariably lead her into the lives of others in need. Described by its creators BRYAN FULLER (“Star Trek: Voyager”) and TODD HOLLAND (“Malcolm in the Middle”), with tongues firmly in cheek, as “Touched by a Crazy Person,” the series focuses on Jaye as she meddles in, muddles up, and ultimately betters the lives of herself, her eccentric family of overachievers, and the eclectic variety of strangers that cross her path. Over the course of this series Jaye will discover that the world around her really is a magical place, and that the seemingly random events in her life are actually all part of something much greater.

(Yes, I fell asleep on the sofa and just woke up.... also the story of my life...)
